![]() The premier of the movie “Divergent” this weekend is only adding to the marketing frenzy around weapon-wielding girls. And Stella, a female Angry Bird, will soon get her own mobile app and accessories, so she can be dressed up and launched into the air to destroy pig fortresses. ![]() Toy makers have begun marketing a more aggressive line of playthings and weaponry for girls - inspired by a succession of female warrior heroes like Katniss, the Black Widow of “The Avengers,” Merida of “Brave” and now, Tris of the book and new movie “Divergent” - even as the industry still clings to every shade of pink.Īctivision’s latest Skylanders game, Swap Force, includes Stealth Elf, Roller Brawl and Smolderdash, all of whom are on an equal footing with their male counterparts. Heroines for young girls are rapidly changing, and the toy industry - long adept at capitalizing on gender stereotypes - is scrambling to catch up. Grace’s new role model is Katniss Everdeen, the (also beautiful) huntress/survivor in the “Hunger Games” trilogy of books and movies. Forget Ariel, the beautiful mermaid princess. That would be her Nerf Rebelle Heartbreaker Exclusive Golden Edge Bow by Hasbro, a petunia-colored weapon with gold and white trim that shoots colorful foam darts. The only pink left is her new bow and arrow. It’s not always fun, you might even get yelled at or grunted at, but in the end, some of our most beneficial lessons are those that hurt a little and take some time to learn.Once upon a time, Grace Maher twirled around the house in Disney princess costumes, a vision of sequins, tiaras and pink. Teaching kids about money and smart choices takes time and patience. Kid feels good that they didn’t end up spending any of their money and they can now save for something else! Parents feel good that child learned something about taking the time to fix something and not wasting her money.Ĭheck. So, we connected another chain and a 3rd one and the Nerf Rebelle bow now shoots almost like it did when it was new!Ĭheck. ![]() Anyone who has girls has 1000’s of rubber bands left from the rainbow loom craze! Some little angel whispered in my ear… ‘use the rubber bands’! So, we did! We created a basic rainbow loom chain bracelet and hooked it up to the Nerf Rebelle Bow to replace the broken string. I started looking for stretchable cord and craft string and decided to go look in our craft supply. Anything decent was at least $10, so that wasn’t as appealing as originally thought. Off we went to Amazon to look for a string. Not to mention, tossing another piece of plastic in Mother Earth is not really what she wants! It’s fun to have something new, but it’s not always the smartest buying choice to make. It took some persistence and it would have been easier to just give in and let her buy it and not learn a lesson about how to fix things and re-use them. She could save the extra money for something else or put it into her savings account. She didn’t like the idea much as she had settled on something new, but after a while, she was open to the idea and decided that spending a few bucks on some new arrows and a string would be a good choice. After some drama and storming around the house, she came back to talk and we challenged her on fixing her toy. My other half heard her ready to buy it and challenged her as to why she would spend $28-$35 on something that she willing shared she had broken herself by pulling the string to hard. This week, she has been doing extra jobs around the house to earn the money she needed to purchase a new one. I’ve looked for replacement strings and they don’t sell them for these silly expensive toys. ![]() Did you know that you could use rubber bands to replace the string on a Nerf Rebelle Bow ? One of our kids has been convinced that they needed a new bow and arrow as the string on the old one had broken over a year ago.
